The 500 Festival, which advocates and celebrates the spirit, heritage and legacy of the Indianapolis 500 through social, cultural and educational events and programs, earned 17 industry honors from the International Festival and Events Association (IFEA).
The 500 Festival earned six Gold Pinnacle Awards, six Silver Pinnacle Awards and five Bronze Pinnacle Awards.
Among the awards, the IPL 500 Festival Parade was selected as the industry's Best Event. The 500 Festival also earned the bronze Grand Pinnacle award after being nominated as a finalist for the Grand Pinnacle, the IFEA's highest honor, for the first time.
"While our primary goal is to serve our communities, it's always an honor to receive international recognition from industry peers," said Kirk Hendrix, president and CEO, 500 Festival. "Many people contributed to this success. Our team of exceptionally hard-working and talented staff, dedicated volunteers and loyal sponsors enable us to produce quality events and programs that improve the quality of life for our residents and their guests, and in many cases, have captured international interest and recognition for our city and state."
The awards were distributed Sept. 23 during the IFEA/Haas & Wilkerson Pinnacle Awards Ceremony during the IFEA's 54th Annual Convention in Indianapolis.
Each year, the IFEA recognizes outstanding examples of quality and creativity in the promotional programs and materials produced by its 2,400 member festivals and events around the world. More than 1,500 entries were submitted this year.
Gold Pinnacle Awards were presented to the 500 Festival for the Best Event (IPL 500 Festival Parade), Best Children's Programming (Chase 500 Festival Kids' Day), Best Single Newspaper Display Ad (500 Festival 50th Anniversary Legacy Art Project Ad), Best Street Banner (500 Festival Pole Banners), Best Pin or Button (American Family Insurance 500 Festival Community Day pin, produced in cooperation with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway) and Best Miscellaneous Printed Materials (500 Festival Volunteer Program Postcard).
Among the Silver Pinnacle Awards received by the 500 Festival included Best Educational Program (500 Festival and Indianapolis 500 Education Program) and Best Media Relations Campaign (500 Festival "Laps, Legends & Legacy: Honoring the 100th Anniversary of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway").
The 500 Festival, a not-for-profit volunteer organization, was created in 1957 to organize civic events celebrating the greatest race in the world. Over the past 53 years, the 500 Festival has grown to become one of the largest festivals in the nation.
