Longtime IMS Employee Gladys Cagle Dies At 86

Gladys Cagle, widow of longtime Indianapolis Motor Speedway Superintendent Clarence Cagle, died Oct. 9 in Indianapolis. She was 86.

Gladys Cagle was hired as secretary to the superintendent in 1954 and worked in that position until 1977. She and Clarence were married June 21, 1963. They celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary two weeks before he passed away on July 5, 2003.

During her many years at the Speedway, Gladys became friends with the entire spectrum of people who were involved in maintaining the track and putting on the Indianapolis 500, from the drivers to the constructions workers.

Clarence and Gladys Cagle moved to Ormond Beach, Fla., after they retired but continued to be involved in racing. They annually attended the Indianapolis 500 Oldtimers Club barbeque at the Speedway each May. Last May, she participated in a memorial ceremony at the track for her late husband.

Gladys Cagle was born in Colchester, Ontario, on June 7, 1918. She became a U.S. citizen in 1943.

Survivors include daughters Linda Weber of Speedway, Ind., and Cheryl Cantrell of St. Louis, five grandchildren, four step-grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Services will be conducted at Flanner-Buchanan Speedway Funeral Center on 2950 N. High School Road, Indianapolis, IN 46224, with calling hours from 4-8 p.m. Oct. 12. The funeral will take place at 10 a.m. Oct. 13 at the funeral center.
