
More Honors For Wheldon
2005 Indianapolis 500 stars Dan Wheldon and Danica Patrick each were nominated for 2005 ESPY Awards, the annual awards presented to top worldwide athletes by the ESPN television network.
Wheldon, who won the 89th Indianapolis 500 on May 29, was nominated in the "Best Driver" category. Others nominated were Formula One World Champion Michael Schumacher, NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series champion Kurt Busch and NHRA Pro Stock champion Greg Anderson.
Patrick, who earned JPMorgan Chase Rookie of the Year honors at Indianapolis after finishing fourth, was nominated for "Best Breakthrough." Others nominated were Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade and tennis player Maria Sharapova.
Fans can vote online for Wheldon by clicking here and Patrick by clicking here. The ESPY Awards, which take place at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles, will be televised live at 9 p.m. (EDT) Sunday, July 17 on ESPN.
"Obviously, the category that I have been nominated for, 'Best Driver,' means a lot to me," Wheldon said. "Any time you are compared to a seven-time World Champion like Michael Schumacher makes you very excited. To win an ESPY would be icing on the cake after winning the Indianapolis 500."It is going to be a great evening, and I am really looking forward to it."
