An online auction for a VIP race package for the 2006 Indianapolis 500 raised $3,600 for the Pentagon Memorial Fund.
The Indianapolis Motor Speedway donated the exclusive race package to the Pentagon Memorial Fund, Inc., an organization created by family members of those who lost their lives in the Sept. 11, 2001 attack on the Pentagon to raise money for a special memorial that will be a dedication to each of the 184 people who died.
The Indianapolis 500 VIP race package was the premier item among 14 sports, political and luxury packages that were donated as a part of a 10-day auction on eBay that ended Saturday, Oct. 15.
Included in the unique package for two are passes for the public drivers' meeting and tickets to the 500 Festival Parade on May 27, 2006, suite tickets and pit passes for the historic 90th Running of the Indianapolis 500 on May 28, and admission to the Victory Celebration on May 29.
All proceeds from the winning bid of $3,600 were donated to the Fund. The Indianapolis 500 VIP package attracted the highest final bid of any item in the auction.
The Pentagon Memorial Fund, Inc. is a non-profit organization that was created in May 2003 to raise the funds necessary to build and maintain the Pentagon Memorial. Members of the organization, corporate executives and political dignitaries, including congressional leaders, proposed this memorial as a place of remembrance, a place of comfort and reflection for those left behind and a place of hope and renewal for future generations.
This very moving memorial will rest on the grounds of the Pentagon at the site of the 9/11 impact and consists of 184 individual cantilevered memorial units, honoring each person who was killed there.
Construction of the Memorial Park is scheduled to break ground in late 2006.
