Indy 500 Is Marquee Event Of 17-Race IndyCar Series Schedule In 2007

ABC will provide live Race Day coverage of the 91st Indianapolis 500, the 43rd consecutive year the network has broadcast "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing."

The Indianapolis 500 is the centerpiece of a 17-race schedule for the 2007 IndyCar Series season, with complete Race Day coverage of the 91st edition of "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing" live on ABC.

The 91st Indianapolis 500 is scheduled for Sunday, May 27 on the historic 2.5-mile oval at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Sam Hornish Jr. is the reigning champion, edging Marco Andretti by .0635 of a second last May in the second-closest finish in the history of the event.

Hornish also went on to win the IndyCar Series title, becoming the second consecutive Indy 500 winner to achieve that feat. Dan Wheldon pulled off the Indy-season title "double" in 2005.

The Indianapolis 500 is one of 12 oval races on the 2007 IndyCar Series schedule, with three races on permanent road courses and two on temporary street circuits.

Oval events at Kansas Speedway on April 29 and The Milwaukee Mile on June 3 will precede and follow, respectively, the Month of May at Indianapolis. Both races enter new slots on the schedule, with the Milwaukee race returning to its traditional date of the first weekend after the Indianapolis 500. From 1947-95, The Milwaukee Mile played host to the cars and drivers of the Indy 500 in the weeks following the "500."

The Indianapolis 500 is one of seven IndyCar Series events on ABC in 2007. Five races will be televised on ESPN and five on ESPN2.

ABC first broadcast the Indianapolis 500 in 1965, a relationship that is the second-longest in sports between a network and sports property.
