This is great news ! What a wonderful and well deserved tribute to the most successful family to ever hit "the brickyard". Wish I could be there on Opening Day. Unfortunately, this California boy can't get off work for Opening Day and the race. But you can believe we'll be there for the 92nd running. The Unser's have alwasy been a class act, and I'll never forget the year Little Al took the time to make my (then) 7 year old feel special. That was in 1993 and my son (now 26) has never forgot it. Thanks Al !! And congrats again, Unser Family ! |

I have enjoyed all the Unser's racing.I live in Indy and appreciate the spirit and genuine joy that this family brings to the city and the race track. What great memories.. My first impression of the name Unser was when during the '79 or '82 500,Al sr. was driving and I believe was leading. His car literally caught on fire ..as he roared past us down the main stretch, you could see a 3 foot flame coming from the back of his car.Al kept going! He didn't want to stop!He turned about 3 more laps before he finally heeded the black flag.. now THAT is determination! That kind of attitude explains why he won 4 500's. I became a fan of Al jr's as he was close to my age and making a big impression.I used to watch him battle it out a lot of times with Michael Andretti. It was great! He could beat them anywhere, road course or oval --Pike's peak anyone? He won Long Beach 6 times! The anoouncer called him the "Emperor" of Long Beach.Edging out Scott Goodyear in '92,the battle with Emmo in '93,another victory in '94.Many IROC championships. He could beat you on a bicycle! Of course Bobby Unser was great also.I remember in '89 Bobby drove the pace car and the track officials had to tell him to slow down..He was driving too fast! There was another time when some local d.j.'s decided it would be a good idea to let Bobby drive them around the interstate.Well he did --naturally- fast.It scared those guys really bad. They didn't want to do that again! Hilariuos! I look forward to Al III,if he's anything like his family you will see his face on the Borg-Warner trophy before you know it.. Thanks to all the Unsers..and congratulations on the honors! |

There is absolutely no way you cannot associate the name "Unser" without linking it to the Indy 500. I cannot ever imagine going to Indy without the Unsers being around. I met Al Unser Jr outside of gasoline alley in 1991 and could not believe how truly down to earth he was/is. Heck he even invited me into his mobile home to autograph some pictures for my nephews. I won't ever forget that. As for his father, Al Sr. The man flat knew how to drive the Indy 500. Nobody that saw him race those Johnny Lightning Cars will ever forget them. Bobby was just a speed demon over there. They were all awesome! |

Can anyone update the news on Al Jr. getting cleared to drive this year. I can't find any news on him. The 500 won't be the same without him on the track. |
