Art Cross turned 85 on Jan. 24 and still lives on his 40 acres between Laporte and Rolling Prairie in northern Indiana. Fifty years ago, Cross drove the Springfield Welding Spl. owned by Bessie Paoli, to second place in the Indianapolis 500-Mile Race behind the invincible Bill Vukovich. This was the year after he became the first Indy 500 Rookie of the Year. Cross is the oldest of five surviving drivers from that "500" a half-century ago. The others are Don Freeland, who will be 78 on March 25, Jim Rathmann, 74, Chuck Stevenson, 83, and Rodger Ward, later a two-time race winner who turned 82 on Jan. 10. Read Full Story |
