Indianapolis 500 Appeal Heard June 17
Message:
A hearing was conducted June 17 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to consider the final appeal of the protest filed by Team Green, Inc. contesting the official results of the 2002 Indianapolis 500-Mile Race. Both Team Green and Penske Racing made opening statements, presented relevant evidence and questioned witnesses in front of Tony George, president and chief executive officer of the Indy Racing League. Indianapolis attorney Dave Mattingly, with the law firm Ice Miller, was the administrator of the hearing Monday. "Today was a very productive day, and we were able to reach the goal of the day, which was for both teams to have an opportunity to present information," Mattingly said. "Both Team Green and Penske Racing were diligent in their presentations." Various Indy Racing League officials were present during the hearing to verify information provided by both teams. Under the rules of the Indy Racing League, George will make the decision on the appeal. While there is no deadline for the issuance of a decision by George on the final appeal, according to Indy Racing League rules, a decision normally is issued within 30 days as also stated in the Indy Racing League Rule Book.
