1912 Indy Flashback: Heartbreak for DePalma; Dawson Wins
This is the first in a series of historical stories called "Indy Flashback" that will appear on www.indy500.com leading up to the month of May.

The World Wide Web has become almost commonplace in households, and each year since www.indy500.com opened, a news story about that year's Indianapolis 500 has appeared on the Web page within hours of the checkered flag falling. But in the early days of the "500," people all over the country had to wait until the next day to find out who had won the race by reading newspapers.

In this series of features, Joe Crowley, media coordinator for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, has written stories as they would have appeared had there been a World Wide Web in the early part of the 20th century. These stories are not stories from years past but were written in late 2002 as if they had been written on the dates the races actually occurred.
