 Escorted Hugh Obrian (Wyatt Erup, TV Star) In 1983 I was stationed at Ft Ben (Protocol Office), when Gen French (Commanding General) was contacted by Hugh Obrian, retired Marine COL (reserves), in reference to the Indy 500 race. I was detailed to escort him to the Indy 500 and all functions afterwards, winners dinner and so on. I am originally from East 10th Street, and had gone to the race a couple of times, but this would be my greatest thrill. I was in gasoline ally, the start finish line, and the main tower, on RACE DAY, with all the drivers, owners, and celebraties. A Dream Come True for a Hoosier and some one who loves the Indy. To meet the andrettes, Newman (rest in peace), and all the others, was one of the greatest thrills of my life. Then, that night at the house of the winners dinner with the basketball stars, drivers, and celebraties, WOW. I am a retired Army SFC, with two tours in Vietnam, currently suffering from Agent Orange Cancer, and could not make the trip now, but the memories will always be there. |
